Swedish green steel venture HYBRIT said that it had made the world’s first customer delivery of steel produced without using coal as it looks to revolutionize an industry that accounts for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Several Swedish and Norwegian companies have teamed up to build a 17-MW fossil-free hydrogen facility at Ovako AB’s steel mill in Hofors, Sweden, it was announced on Tuesday.
Green steel initiative Hybrit, a joint venture between Sweden’s SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, has produced the world’s first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron at a pilot scale in what the companies describe as a “decisive step on the road to fossil-free steel”.
The Swedish steelmaker SSAB has curtailed negotiations on the potential acquisition of the Dutch steel mill IJmuiden and related rolling capacities belonging to the transnational group Tata Steel, including due to the impossibility of switching to green metallurgy.
