ArcelorMittal, Spain to invest €1bn in green steel

Europe’s largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal and the Spanish government have signed an initial deal to contribute a total of €1bn ($1.18bn) towards investment in green steel projects in northern Spain, including a direct reduced iron (DRI) unit and hybrid electric arc furnace (EAF) in Gijon.

HYBRIT first to create hydrogen-reduced sponge iron

Green steel initiative Hybrit, a joint venture between Sweden’s SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, has produced the world’s first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron at a pilot scale in what the companies describe as a “decisive step on the road to fossil-free steel”.
